Rotawewa, Minneriya – GFC Waste Management Ltd. (GFCWM), a leading provider of integrated healthcare waste management solutions in Sri Lanka, has commenced the development of its second state-of-the-art medical waste treatment facility in Rotawewa, Minneriya, with an investment of LKR 520 million.
The proposed facility has been strategically planned to enhance the country’s healthcare waste management capacity by providing environmentally sound treatment and disposal services for medical waste generated by healthcare institutions across the Northern, Eastern, and North Central Provinces. Upon completion, the facility will strengthen the regional healthcare waste management network while supporting national environmental protection and public health objectives.
In compliance with the regulatory requirements governing the project, GFCWM is currently undertaking the process of obtaining the Environmental Protection License (EPL) from the Central Environmental Authority (CEA). Simultaneously, an Initial Environmental Examination (IEE) is being conducted by the appointed environmental consultants, EML Consultants (Pvt) Ltd., to ensure that the project is developed in accordance with all applicable environmental regulations, national standards, and international best practices.
As part of its stakeholder engagement and community consultation program, GFCWM recently organized a technical site visit to its existing medical waste treatment facility in Hambantota on 5th May, 2026 for key stakeholders from the Rotawewa area. The initiative was designed to provide participants with a comprehensive understanding of the operational processes, environmental safeguards, and management systems that will be implemented at the proposed facility.
The stakeholder delegation comprised the Chief Incumbent Priest of the area, local community representatives, farmer organisation members, the Grama Niladhari, officers of the Environmental Police, the Chairman and members of the Hingurakgoda Pradeshiya Sabha, including opposition representatives, officials from the Divisional Secretariat, the Public Health Inspector (PHI), the Director of the Regional Director of Health Services (RDHS) – Polonnaruwa, the Medical Officer of Health (MOH), and other government and community representatives.
During the visit, participants were provided with detailed presentations and guided facility observations covering the complete medical waste treatment process, operational controls, environmental monitoring systems, occupational health and safety measures, emissions management, and ongoing maintenance practices. The program enabled stakeholders to witness firsthand the stringent environmental and operational standards maintained by GFCWM and to gain a clear understanding of how the proposed Rotawewa facility will operate while ensuring the protection of surrounding communities and the environment.
